This is a question that many people are starting to ask.
The short answer is, not exactly.
To better answer this, we went ahead and ran a quick test. Like other videos you may see, we submerged it in water for about 1 min 58 seconds. The phone seemed to work fairly well after we pulled it out of the sink, with the exception of the microphone and the loudspeaker.
We wanted to find out what exactly is making this phone hold up so much better than other generations when submerged in water.
The simple answer is a thin piece of adhesive that is factory applied between the glass, LCD assembly, and back housing that effectively seals the top part of the phone and makes it somewhat impermeable, but not completely. This adhesive is not found in any other generation/model iPhone. It is similar to the Apple Watch, where the glass is sealed with a strong adhesive, which prevents water from penetrating the internals of the device.
When we cracked it open, we found some moisture by the ear speaker, on the rear camera, and in the charging port. But it was significantly less than what would have been found in a previous generation phone under the same circumstances.
While we don’t recommend that you take this phone swimming or take a shower with it, we will say it is a lot less likely you’ll suffer water damage should you spill a drink or drop your phone in the sink. Are the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus waterproof? Probably not, but definitely water-resistant.
